The best burger in the States

With a bit of free time on my hands, I’m prone to find odd things on the interweb.

One of those fortunate stumbles a few days ago led me to a list of the best burgers in the States. From 33 finalists, the Smash  burger at Neon Pig, Tupelo, MS was named the ultimate Winner.

Tupelo was on the way north, so I had to stop in.

The Pig was an artisan butchery, with the new owners adding a burger cafe, fresh seafood and craft beer to the front of house. What a brilliant idea.

I sat at the bar and placed my order for a Smash burger.

I watched it cooked on the grill right in front of me, reminiscent of the days when burgers were ordered at fish and chip shops run by the local Greek family.

And then it arrived. Unfortunately excitement overcame me and I didn’t take a photo, for as soon as I had that first bite, I just couldn’t stop eating.

Wow – rich, bacony, succulent, perfectly cooked, with just the right additions of onion, pickles, cheese and sauce.

I raved about Franklin’s BBQ earlier, and that remains the single best meal I’ve had in the States but the Smash burger is a strong second. It is an absolute ripper, and eating it in the same butchers shop where they broke down a whole animal to make the meat patties is so refreshingly honest.

Tupelo may not have the biggest range of food a la New York, Tokyo and Melbourne, but they do demonstrate that with care and attention, respect and a little love, anyone can excel.

Bless the staff at the Neon Pig and long may the Smash burger reign.
